Performance floors ‘make a difference’ in automated, robotic systems
Brayan Jara, New Zealand business manager and senior engineer at Face Consultants, says one critical element is often overlooked.
“The floor is frequently not considered early enough when companies plan automated systems, yet it plays a vital role in how that equipment performs,” Jara says.
Robotic equipment is highly sensitive to floor flatness, levelness, surface defects, joints and abrasion resistance. Floors not designed, constructed or maintained to the required standard can compromise speed, safety and long-term performance, affecting overall return on investment.
“A poorly performing floor can lead to slower operation, increased wear on equipment and, in some cases, the need for remediation after installation,” Jara says. “That introduces delays and additional cost that could have been avoided.”
Face Consultants, working in partnership with the CoGri Group, takes a structured approach to addressing these issues. The process begins with identifying flooring performance requirements using in-house surveying equipment designed to deliver accurate and controlled measurement.
“Once we understand the condition of the floor, we can recommend the appropriate solution. That may include grinding, repairs, surface upgrades such as topping layers, or addressing specific defects to achieve the tolerances required for automated systems.”
The company’s work has also contributed to the development of flooring standards used across the industry, developed in collaboration with robotic and automation manufacturers to ensure systems operate efficiently and safely.
“The goal is to bridge the gap between design intent and operational reality,” Jara says. “A well-prepared floor ensures systems perform as expected both now and in the future.”
He says early involvement is critical.
“The key to a successful outcome is engaging a flooring specialist at the planning and design stage,” he says. “That allows potential issues to be identified and addressed before they become costly problems.”
With warehouse automation continuing to expand, Jara says the importance of the floor should not be underestimated.
“Investing in the floor is investing in the performance of the entire operation. It underpins everything else.”
