A growing number of warehouses are deploying automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to support safer, more efficient and productive operations.
“Companies continue to invest in automation, and AGVs are often the most feasible solution – addressing labour shortages, safety risks, flexible layouts, and the increasing need for space and productivity,” says Martin Broglia, managing director of Bonfiglioli Australia and New Zealand.
“As the sector evolves, we’re seeing demand for modular, high-precision systems. In response, bonfiglioli has developed the BlueRoll gearbox.”
The BlueRoll is a wheel-mounted gearbox designed specifically for AGVs, delivering precise positioning and energy efficiency over long duty cycles. The unit is nearly fully enclosed within the wheel and mounts directly to the vehicle chassis, streamlining installation. Integrated bearings support high radial loads, and the unit can be configured in multiple sizes to suit different weight classes. Top speed is rated at 2 m/s. Its flat, compact axle layout supports space-saving system designs.
“This gearbox is engineered for high-load capacity and long-term durability,” says Broglia. “It uses high-grade planetary gears and supports a variety of feedback systems, including safety encoders. It’s well-suited for a broad range of warehouse and materials handling uses.”
Three versions of the BlueRoll are now available:
• BlueRoll Basic – Designed for loads between 360 and 1020 kg, with a top speed of 2 m/s. It comes in three formats: the 1.7 kg TQW 060, the 5.5 kg TQW 070, and the 10.9 kg TQW 090.
• BlueRoll Advanced – Offers low inertia and includes holding and safety brakes. It supports three gearbox sizes, four motor frame formats and a wide encoder range for easier integration. Sizes range from 1.3 kg (BMD 65) to 7.7 kg (BMD 118).
• BlueRoll Compact – Around 25% smaller than standard motor-gearbox assemblies and highly adaptable. Its mechanical design improves overall energy performance.
“Choosing the right gearmotor is critical. Our technical team works closely with customers to ensure the solution is aligned with their application needs,” says Broglia.
Broglia says the BlueRoll will make its local debut at the 2025 Foodtech Packtech & MHL Expo, running September 2-4 at the Auckland Showgrounds. Entry is free. Bonfiglioli will be exhibiting at stand J23, alongside other technologies for the processing and packaging sectors.
“There’s a lot of smart engineering in this range, and we’re looking forward to introducing it to the New Zealand market,” he says.
