The ‘great debate’ in New Zealand freight
The 2024 New Zealand Electro Mobility Summit & Expo, held October 16-17, provides what show organiser Brightstar Conferences describes as a great opportunity to delve into the current landscape and future of clean transport.

A panel discussion, ‘EECA-backed decarbonisation: Comparing hydrogen and electric vehicle trucks for clean transport’, held on the first day of the summit, is an example of the industry-led and future-focused initiatives throughout the two days. Green hydrogen is emerging as a promising alternative fuel for heavy-duty vehicles.
Hiringa Energy, “New Zealand’s frontrunner” in building a nationwide green hydrogen refuelling network, and Ryan McDonald, head of new business, will shed light on this topic and hydrogen production, storage and infrastructure development. The presentation will also include exciting steps towards a greener future and the benefits of hydrogen-powered trucks, including refuelling time and their long range that make them ideal for long-haul journeys.
In the electric heavy truck sector, many viable New Zealand options will become available in 2025, including higher gross train weights. A great example of this is Alfons Reitsma, a senior product engineer for e-mobility at Scania NZ, who has recently delivered a battery electric Scania P25 6×2, curtain-sider to integrated transport and logistics business, RFH Group. He says, “This quality unit travels throughout the central North Island and could go further afield if truck fast chargers are correctly installed in the New Zealand highway network.”
Richard Briggs will share insights on EECA-backed research, grants and incentives. He’ll discuss their role in funding clean transport projects and highlight success stories and lessons learned from past initiatives. Henshall says this information is invaluable for those considering investing in clean trucks, as it can significantly alter cost considerations.
While electric trucks offer a compelling solution, questions remain about battery lifespan and disposal. The summit will feature a presentation by Graeme Cochrane from Infinitev, addressing the materials used in EV batteries and exploring existing solutions for their repurposing and recycling.
“Alongside the insightful presentations, the summit boasts an exhibition showcasing the latest products and services critical to the future of clean transport,” adds Henshall.
