Warehouse integrator delivers complex automation as ‘one solution’
Warehouse automation is rarely about selecting a single piece of technology. Today’s operations bring together automated storage, internal transport, picking, robotics, sortation, software and operational processes. The real challenge is ensuring every element works together as one reliable and efficient system.
This is where the power of an integrator becomes clear.
“At Toyota Automated Logistics, we believe customers should not have to bring a complex automation solution together themselves,” says Roald de Groot, director of sales at Toyota Automated Logistics Australia and New Zealand. “Our role as an integrator is to understand the complete operation, select the right technologies and make sure everything works together as one system. Ultimately, the customer is not investing in individual pieces of equipment; they are investing in a business outcome.”
De Groot says a true systems integrator starts with the customer’s operation, rather than with a preferred technology. The first step is to understand the business requirements, existing processes, product characteristics, throughput, growth expectations and operational risks. Only then should the individual technologies be selected and combined into an integrated solution.
He says this technology-independent approach is important because no two operations are the same. A technology that works well in one warehouse may not provide the right outcome in another. The best solution is often a carefully designed combination of technologies, selected according to their suitability for each part of the process.
An integrator takes responsibility for the complete operational flow, from receiving and internal transport through storage, picking, packing and shipping. This includes coordinating equipment, controls and software, managing interfaces between suppliers and validating the performance of the overall system.
De Groot adds that without this integration responsibility, customers can find themselves managing multiple technology providers, each focused on its own area of supply. Individual components may perform correctly, while the complete system still fails to achieve the required operational outcome. A capable integrator closes these gaps and provides clear accountability for overall performance.
“Toyota Automated Logistics brings together the capabilities and experience of Bastian Solutions, Vanderlande’s warehousing business and viastore under one global brand. This provides access to an extensive portfolio of automation technologies, intelligent software and lifecycle services, supported by the global strength of Toyota Industries Corporation.”
This broader capability allows Toyota Automated Logistics to support customers across the complete warehouse process while selecting the most suitable solution for each application. It also provides the flexibility to combine proprietary technologies with complementary partner solutions where these deliver the best outcome.
De Groot explains that the power of an integrator extends beyond system design and implementation. A warehouse may operate for decades, while volumes, product ranges, service expectations and technologies continue to change. The original design must therefore consider scalability, maintainability and future adaptation from the outset.
“Lifecycle planning, preventive maintenance, training, spare-parts availability, software support and continuous improvement are essential parts of the solution. Local service capabilities, combined with access to global expertise, give customers confidence that their operation will remain supported throughout its life,” he says.
De Groot says integration ultimately means simplifying complexity for the customer. It means providing one accountable partner that connects processes, technologies, software and services into a reliable, scalable and future-ready operation.
“The individual technologies will always matter. However, the greatest long-term value is created by how intelligently they are selected, how effectively they are integrated and how reliably they continue to perform together.”
