MAXIMISING STORAGE SPACE WHILE MAINTAINING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY
In the fast-paced world of warehousing and logistics, space constraints are a common challenge. Traditional solutions include narrow aisle racking to a maximum height, but no matter how narrow the aisle is, it is still dead space that could be better utilised for storing products.

Jones Trading Group (JTG) is a diverse group of companies specialising in transport logistics, export solutions, storage management, and transport technology. Historically, they have used multiple locations to store their products, the bulk of which is their specialised Kiwi truck tyres.
When the opportunity arose to purchase new warehousing space in Drury, JTG leapt at the chance. Not only did having all their products in one place offer greater operational efficiency, but it also allowed them to design their warehouse space to suit their products.
“As we know, warehouse space in Auckland is expensive, so they needed to obtain the highest storage density per square metre to get the best return on investment. This is where PRS comes in. Over eight months, PRS and JTG collaborated, discussing various storage configurations, options and ideas. The result? A winning storage solution that perfectly met the needs of JTG maximised their available space,” says Straka.
In partnership with sister company, Material Handling Solutions, PRS designed, supplied and installed a radio shuttle racking solution alongside traditional pallet racking. The radio shuttle is a semi-automated product in which an operator directs shuttles to transport pallets through a racking structure. Operators load and unload products into the first station in the racking, and the shuttle does the rest, storing and retrieving products faster and safer than is traditionally possible.
Shuttle racking eliminates the need for aisles and allows the client to make full use of both vertical and horizontal space. The outcome was that JTG can now store 1300m2 of tyres in a 400m2 footprint, requiring less than a third of the original space, without requiring specialised material handling equipment.
